We’ve all been in a situation or discussion where there is some element of confusion. All of these situations require one thing that will help us all better understand what is going on and to obtain clarity. Based on my experience as a practitioner of Yoga-Sports, I will try my best to summarize it from the point-of-view of a keen observer.
The development of Yoga-Sports in Malaysia is very recent but growing largely in numbers since the Ministry of Youth and Sports gave the go ahead for the artform to be taught widely, breaking the boundaries of race, religion or spiritual practice that had earlier prohibited Muslims from participating in it. With Saudi Arabia recently allowing for Yoga-Sports to be practiced in the kingdom as a sports activity, it is anticipated that the National Fatwa Council would in time approve the practice of Yoga-Sports as a sport activity in Malaysia.
Yoga-Sports attempts to bridge the missing link in yoga and sports by using a unique world-class approach of teaching yoga, FREE from religious elements, chanting or mystical leanings, and focusing primarily on it as an artistic science based on movement and breath. The sport is structured along well defined asana practices, specially tailored for different age groups and physical abilities based on tried and tested methods.
Through the application of science, Yoga-Sports bridges the gap between yoga and sports, enabling enthusiasts and people of all ages and abilities to understand the scientific background of yoga and practice it with accuracy, intensity and depth.
It provides practitioners with a unique opportunity to turn a passion for yoga and sports, into a professional career, competitive gymnastics, OR purely practiced as a pursuit of creating awareness and understanding of yoga as a holistic science of developing mental and physical health for people from all walks of life.
Yoga-Sports brings together each area of the body into one comprehensive and easy to use yoga practice that addresses the fundamental biomechanics of the body, that helps you maintain your structural fitness, and greater ease of movement. It facilitates greater rest and relaxation by integrating a sustainable and enjoyable way of building a regular home practice into your everyday life, maintaining your basic fitness level.
As a competitive sport, Yoga-Sports athletic competitions are held annually as a regional or international event, and encourages yoga practitioners of all lineages, all ages, genders, and cultural backgrounds, to participate at a competition level. Increased awareness of the Yoga-Sports will encourage existing practitioners to sharpen their skills through training, dedication, and devotion to the sport, and will inspire new practitioners.
I hope this clarifies the questions that most people have on Yoga-Sports, and further hope it generates awareness of the sport among all nations and peoples as it relates to culture, education, and knowledge on a sporting basis. Let the transformation begin!!
